Policies, Goals, and Values
Caleb Bosveld is running to bring new energy and real solutions to Ward 8. The key issues that Caleb wants to tackle are accountability in City Hall, the homelessness crisis, and the rising crime in Ward 8. From practical policies to long-term goals, Caleb is focused on addressing the issues that matter most to residents - because a stronger Ward 8 is built on listening, understanding, and acting.

Key Issues In Ward 8
"These policies reflect the real concerns of Ward 8 residents - and I’ve lived them too. My goal is to bring practical, forward-thinking solutions to City Hall that put our community first."
Accountability/Fiscal Responsibility
Hamilton residents are being asked to pay more each year, while City spending and payroll continue to grow - with little to show for it. Accountability at City Hall has been lacking for too long, from multimillion-dollar projects with no due diligence to councillors missing meetings without consequence. Fiscal responsibility means respecting taxpayer dollars, critically evaluating property tax increases, and demanding smarter, more efficient use of city funds - starting with reining in overgrown city bureaucracy and restoring public trust in how decisions are made.

As Ward 8 City Councillor, Caleb would vote against any budget that proposes property tax increases above the rate of inflation. Hamilton has some of the highest property taxes in the nation, residents can't continue to suffer through record increases.

In January of this year, City Council reduced their meeting schedule by nearly 25%. Despite this, City Council has failed to meet quorum EIGHT times this year alone. Hamilton deserves a City Council that shows up for them every day. As Ward 8 Councillor, Caleb would propose a pay-deduction system to penalize City Councillors for missing meetings. You can't skip days at your job. Your elected officials shouldn't either.

Homelessness
Hamilton is facing a housing crisis, with rampant homelessness creating serious challenges for our communities. According to City data, there are now 2000 homeless people in Hamilton; a 25% increase from 2024. While the City has taken steps, like the Barton/Tiffany Temporary Shelter Project, poor execution has undermined progress.
We must prioritize permanent supportive housing developments by investing in trusted local nonprofits that have a proven track record of success. Prioritizing the allocation of funds to these organizations is essential. Learning from other communities, a person-centred, housing-first approach can significantly reduce chronic homelessness and its related social costs - including the strain on emergency services.

Crime and Safety
Ward 8 has experienced continual rising rates in violent and property crime. Property crime rose over 40% from 2022 to 2024 and violent crime has increased over 28% in the last five years. Creating a safe Ward 8 for all means working with the police, public safety, and social wellness experts.

Fighting crime goes beyond equipping the police - it starts with keeping our youth involved. As Ward 8 Councillor, Caleb would continue to support youth engagement initiatives such as the 'Building Safer Communities Grant' from the City. It is always important to present opportunities for the youth of Hamilton.
